Cheat Sheet: Be NICE
BEHAVIOUR
x
Foster empathy
Talk about your experiences, not your opinions
Reduce group hostility
Humanise the ‘other’ by focusing on what we have in common, active listening and offline connection
Show opinions are extreme
People adopt extreme opinions when they think others hold them. Expose these opinions as fringe
Teach systems literacy
Educate people about the outrage economy so they recognise the motives behind what they see online
NARRATIVE
x
Tell inclusive stories
Inspire people to be right, don’t berate them for being wrong. We need everyone on board
Don’t mistake policy for narrative
Policies are like underwear. Everyone wants to know you have them; nobody wants to see them
Tell more powerful stories
Sticky, values-based empowering stories that invoke curiosity can beat stories of anger and fear
Don’t leave a vacuum
Too often we respond after angertainment has done its damage. Get your positive story out there first
IDEAS
x
Solve big problems together
Working to overcome problems bigger than our divides means we don’t see each other as… ‘other’
Fix the economy
Grievance politics relies on us having grievances: economic inequality, first and foremost
Don’t give up
The arc of history is long but it bends towards justice. Taking our foot off the pedal makes that arc longer
Ditch the political spectrum
Centrism is not the opposite to extremism, it helps entrench it. ‘Radical’ ideas are actually mainstream
CULTURE
x
Shift the vibe
Angertainers have way more fun. We need to lose our inhibitions and be way more authentic
Make better content
We can package good ideas to hijack the algorithms just like the bad ones do so well
No style without substance, and vice-versa
In reality we need both. Good ideas; creatively told
Let creators be creators
Move over legacy media, creators need to be part of the solution not just be asked to broadcast it
ECOSYSTEM - PLATFORM
x
Create a duty of care
Big Tech platforms need to have a duty of care to prevent their products from causing harm
Fix the algorithms
Give people control; build bridges; add warning labels; and more puppy photos
Open the black box
For something so harmful, we need authorities to be able to see the ingredients in order to regulate them
Design features for safety
Build features that discourage dunking on our opponents and sharing harmful content
Remove financial incentives for outrage
Much angertainment is created simply because it’s a great way to make money. Remove those rewards
ECOSYSTEM - POLITICAL
x
Be like Bobby
Toning down the political rhetoric reduces political violence on both sides
Independent election authorities
The controversial idea of making it easier to vote, under rules that make it fair for everyone
Compulsory and preferential voting
These mean elections are decided by the majority mainstream and not the angriest fringe
Fix the news
Make it fit for social media, and
report
on outrage rather than feeding it. And more public media please
Pay for that journalist’s Substack
We still want and need news. Support quality journalists making it who are social media natives
